Baritone Hyunkyum Kim was born in South Korea and earned his Bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Chung-Ang University. He continued his studies at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media under Prof. Dr. Peter Anton Ling, where he completed his Master’s degree. He then pursued further training as a student in the soloist class/Konzertexamen program in Hanover.
In South Korea, he appeared on numerous concert and opera stages and successfully participated in various international vocal competitions. In 2022, he won First Prize at the Walter and Charlotte Hamel Opera Competition in Hanover.
He performed as Escamillo in Bizet’s "Carmen" at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen. As a guest at the Staatstheater Hannover, he sang Fiorello and the Officer in the revival of "Il barbiere di Siviglia". His nuanced portrayal of Ford in Verdi’s "Falstaff" at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media was highly praised.
Since the 2023/24 season, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern. His operatic debut there was marked by a remarkable performance as Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, in Verdi’s "Don Carlo".
In addition to his successful portrayal of Rodrigo, he also performed the role of Sherifa in "Hamed und Sherifa".
In the 2024/25 season, Hyunkyum Kim appeared at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern as Sharpless ("Madama Butterfly"), Frank/Fritz ("Die tote Stadt"), and Le Bailli ("Werther").
In the 2025/26 season, he will be heard as Marcello and as Weinberg in "Wir gratulieren" by Mieczysław Weinberg.
